Astraeus; son of Silenus and brother to Leneus and Maron, was the chief of the satyrs who followed Dionysus in his legendary Indian campaign.
Born of wine and twilight, Astraeus was both warrior and reveler, his laughter echoing through battle, his eyes lit by starlight and madness alike.
In Nonnus’ Dionysiaca, he leads not with cruelty, but with divine ecstasy, the joy of existence even amid chaos. He embodies Dionysus’s truth: that from intoxication comes revelation, from frenzy comes freedom.
