Once, the earth bloomed endlessly beneath the care of Demeter, goddess of the harvest. Fields of gold stretched as far as the eye could see, rivers flowed with life, and every seed answered her touch.

But in the shadowed depths of the underworld, Hades, ruler of the dead, watched with desire the maiden Persephone, Demeter’s radiant daughter. With a chariot of obsidian steeds, he rose from the earth and carried her away, making her queen of his realm.
